Five important hurricane preparedness tips

  1. Stay informed: Keep track of the hurricane’s progress by listening to local news, checking the National Hurricane Center website, or downloading a hurricane tracking app. Pay attention to updates from local authorities regarding evacuation orders, shelter locations, and other important information.
  2. Prepare emergency supplies: Stock up on non-perishable food, bottled water, and other essential supplies such as batteries, flashlights, and first aid kits. If you have pets, make sure to include pet food, water, and other necessary items.
  3. Secure your property: Secure or move outdoor items such as patio furniture, potted plants, and bicycles. Close and board up windows and doors, and reinforce garage doors. Consider installing storm shutters or impact-resistant windows if you live in a hurricane-prone area.
  4. Evacuate if necessary: Follow local authorities’ evacuation orders if they are issued. Have a plan in place for where you will go and how you will get there. If you’re unable to evacuate, find a safe location in your home, such as an interior room on the ground floor.
  5. Have a communication plan: Establish a communication plan with family and friends before the hurricane hits. Make sure everyone knows where to meet in case you become separated, and have a plan for checking in with each other after the storm passes. Keep your phone charged and have backup power sources available in case of power outages.
